takeaways!

At the end of each of my posts, I will leave you with a takeaway!

From my last post I ended with bread and wanted to leave you with a great bread that has sprouted flour. Sprouted flour is made from sprouted grain that most bodies digest as a vegetable rather than a starch. I learned about "sprouted flour" from a great cookbook my sister Carol turned me on to called "Essential Eating - a Cookbook" by Janie Quinn. Janie wrote this book to "enable the body to ease, not disease". Her passion is "healing the body through cooking and eating good food that is nutritious, easy to digest, great tasting and chemical free". The bread that I buy is called Alvarado St. Bakery Sprouted Barley Bread - 100% whole grain - made with Organic Grains. Their website is http://www.alvaradostreetbakery.com/breads.html they have lots of other types of breads to choose from and you can feel really good about eating them - they will not stress your pancreas to digest and taste really good (can also buy at Health Markets). Another type of bread I eat is Sprouted Spelt bread. Spelt bread is a grain-bread that is closely related to wheat. but it does not contain gluten which is a form of protein which a lot of people are allergic to. Even if you are not gluten intolerant it is a great substitute for wheat and has more B vitamins than any other of the wheat grains. Sprouted spelt would be the best! Here is a good recipe for spelt bread http://coconutandquinoa.wordpress.com/2009/07/18/sprouted-spelt-bread-with-seeds/ and Janie Quinn's book has a great recipe for Sprouted Spelt Bread as well as Spelt Zucchini Bread. But you can also buy at Whole Foods or other Health Food Stores. Of course the Ezekiel breads are sprouted and great for you as well and you can buy this brand of sprouted bread in the frozen section at Giant. But as we know it's always better to make ourselves!
